Extend Energy converted 8600 ft2 of unused roof space into a solar electricity production facility housing a 35 kW photovoltaic (PV) array - the largest of its kind in Greensboro, NC.
The PV array is composed of 165 solar panels, 215 watts each, mounted with a customized racking system held down with ballast weights to avoid roof penetrations. Three inverters, mounted inside the building, convert the DC solar power into AC grid power, at up to 11,400 watts each. A display on each inverter shows in real time the power produced by the array.

Notes: WB Moore Engineering designed the roof-mounted solar PV system to meet two goals towards obtaining a LEED Platinum certification; provide at least 12.5% on-site renewable energy & help surpass the 28% optimized energy performance goal. Meeting these substantial goals proved challenging but solutions were developed that not only exceeded the design criteria but also broke new ground in the solar industry. The design consists of 134 PV modules manufactured by GE that each provides 205W of power for a total output of 27.5kW making it one of the largest corporate-owned roof-mounted PV system in North Carolina. It will annually provide about 35,500 kWh of power back to the electric grid through five Sunny Boy 5000W inverters. Each GE module is mounted on a Solar Dock mounting frame. All available space on the roof had to be utilized in order to accommodate a PV system of this size, necessitating a review of the structural system itself for adequacy. WB Moore designed a unique removable restraint system for individuals working six feet or closer to the edge of the roof. This PV system allows WB Moore to showcase design and construction capabilities to its clientele and prospective clients.
